Echoing Between LanguagesThe Connection Between Us and Them

By Tai-Chun Chou

Chou Tai-Chun is a contemporary artist active in Taiwan, adept at employing painting and installation to explore complex propositions connected to Taiwan’s island pulse—historical, territorial, environmental—through a distinctive aesthetic language.

In recent years, during his field research in alang Tomong, Tai-Chun has focused intensely on the life journeys of different tribal members, as well as the intergenerational ecological knowledge and hunting experiences of hunters. “Echoing Between Languages” represents Tai-Chun’s first experimental workshop in Tomong, where he arranged drawing boards across the ceremonial ground’s grassland. Collaborating with the community’s vital cultural-historical worker Kaji Cihung and female hunter Heydi, he invited them to recount the cummity stories from the center of the field. Under the narration of Kaji and Heydi, and with Tai-Chun’s guidance, participants condensed this moment into an interweaving of mountain scenery and pigment.

“The Connection Between Us and Them” embodies Tai-Chun’s imagination and representation of the intersubjective relationship between hunters and their prey—their techniques, bodies, and perspectives—developed after numerous mountain expeditions with hunters. Nighttime hunting particularly initiates a novel sensory experience: the hunter’s body merges with the mountain forest while the prey’s reactions simultaneously captivate the hunter’s attention. During daylight, installations concealed among low shrubs resemble hunters and prey scrutinizing each other in dense forests; after nightfall, laser beams traversing tree shadows guide viewers into the eyes and breath of hunters in the darkness.
